QUICK TIME AND MONEY SAVING TIP FOR THE KITCHEN

Do you find that you ask yourself every day "What should I make for dinner?"  For the longest time, I would go to the store week after week, making sure to buy plenty of meat, etc. but yet, I never really knew what I was going to cook for the week.  Each day I would take out some meat to defrost, but then I would think, "Okay, so what will I make with this tonight?"  I never really had a real plan.  There were many nights that I started trying to decide what to make too late at night, and then we ended up eating out.  Well, that sure didn't save money and is definitely not the healthiest alternative.

Well, I recently had an epiphany!  I got out a piece of paper and listed things that I make for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinners.  I got help from the family so I would be sure not to leave anything out.  Now, every week before I go to the store, I get together with the kids and hubby and ask what they will be wanting for that week's dinners.  We/they pick a meal for each night.  I take into account if we will have enough for left overs (depending on what I am making), etc.  I can't tell you how much easier this makes my week because it is simply one less thing I have to think about.  Each day I know what I will be making so it's really simple. This is also a great way of including the entire family on one of the most important things you do together.  Eating!!!

Anyway, this REALLY helped me a lot so I really wanted to share it.  I also bought a "ready made" grocery checklist.  It comes on a magnetized tablet so I can hang it on the refrigerator and simply check things off as we run out of them.  This list literally has things in categories such as produce, meat & fish, etc.  Using a grocery list of any kind, also saves time and money.  You'd be surprised how much impulse buying we do; especially if we are hungry when we go to the store!

PREGNANCY WEEK BY WEEK, WEEK 15

What is happening with your baby:
Your baby now measures about 4 inches long from crown to rump and weighs in at about 2 1/2 ounces; roughly the size of an apple.  She is busy moving about in the amniotic fluid, as she moves the fluid through her nose and upper respiratory tract; this helps the primitive air sacs in her lungs begin to develop.  Her legs are now growing longer than her arms and she can move all of her joints and limbs.  Her eyelids are still fused shut but she can sense light.

How your life is changing:
You have probably gained approximately 5 pounds (although this varies from woman to woman) and are well into your pregnancy.  Most of your early pregnancy discomforts are probably about gone by now, but you may be surprised at other symptoms that arise from time to time, such as a stuffy nose.  This symptom is very common but for many first timers, you may not be aware of this.  You may mistake this as thinking you are getting sick.  But many women suffer from the pregnancy induced stuffy nose; most likely caused by hormonal changes and increased blood flow to your mucous membranes.  The medical name for this condition is "rhinitis of pregnancy."  Many pregnant women also suffer from nosebleeds, which can be caused from increased blood volume and blood vessel expansion in the nose.

If you are having an amniocentesis, you will most likely be having that test between now and 18 weeks.  An amniocentesis can identify hundreds of genetic and chromosomal disorders.

BASIC SUMMER SAFETY TIPS

Well, it's that time again!  Summer is here!  Although summer means many fun and exciting activities, it can also bring along some added risks.  Here are some basic tips on how to keep those kiddos happy and healthy all summer long:

  • Sun Alert - Be sure to use sunscreen.  The sun can do a lot of damage in a very short amount of time so be sure to use sunscreen when you will be outside for longer than about 30 minutes.  The higher the SPF, the better; especially for the kids.
  • Insects - Well, the bugs are out in full force!  So be sure to use your repellant.  There are many natural repellants that you can use such as Citronella Oil, Lemon Eucalyptus Oil, Cinnamon Oil, Castor Oil, Rosemary Oil,  and Lemongrass Oil.  Keep in mind that the more natural repellants will need to be applied more frequently (about every 2 hours) than the store brands.  Also see www.mosquitorepellant.com for more information on repellants.Note:  There are also things you can do to help AVOID attracting mosquitoes:  Avoid dark clothings, carbon dioxide (we tend to give more of this off right after exercising), floral or fruity smells (perfumes, body sprays, etc.), moisture (from perspiration).
  • Bug Bites - No matter how much repellant you use during the summer, you are sure to get a bug bite or two.  So be sure to have Benadryl on hand or something comparable to it.  I have 2 kids that are very sensitive to insect bites and Benadryl is a must have in my home.  I use both the oral form and the cream.  But you should not use both at the same time.  There are other ointments/creams such as cortisone cream, caladryl, calamine lotion, and others that can also be used for bug bites.  Whatever your preference, it is always good to have some on hand.
  • Pool Safety - I don't think enough can be said about pool/water safety.  Be sure you are watchful no matter how well your kids might know how to swim.  Make sure to have the proper life saving gear, such as life jackets.  Never let your child swim alone.  Be careful of pool covers, as they can trap children.  If you do have a pool cover, be sure it is completely covering the pool; not partially.  Any child at the age of 4 or older should take a certified instructional swimming class to learn, at least the basic floating/life saving skills.  It is a good idea for parents to learn CPR.  If you have a pool in your back yard, install alarms on the doors that lead out to the pool area.
  • Heat - Be sure to drink plenty of water when you/kids are out in the heat.  It gets hot quick and dehydration can happen before you know it.  Alcohol should be avoided when you are out in the heat.  Alcohol is a diuretic and does dehydrate you.  If you are going to be drinking, be sure to follow every alcoholic beverage with a glass of water.
Summer is a time for lots of outdoor fun with friends and family, so enjoy!  But be safe!!

PREGNANCY WEEK BY WEEK, WEEK 14

How your baby is growing:
You baby now has the ability to squint, frown, urinate, and suck its thumb!  Due to brain impulses, the facial muscles are getting a workout as its tiny features form different expressions.  The kidneys are producing urine, which is released in the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby.  This will continue until your baby is born.  He/she can grasp now too!
Your baby is steadily growing and now measures about 3 1/2 inches from head to bottom.  He/she now weighs about 1 1/2 ounces.  The body is growing faster than the head and the neck is now more distinct.  By the end of this week, the arms will be proportioned to the rest of the body.  The legs still have some growing to do to catch up though.  Your baby is starting to develop the languo (ultra fine, downy covering hair), which will cover the entire body.  Also this week, your baby's liver will begin to produce bile and the spleen will start helping in the production of red blood cells.  The hands and feet are now measuring about 1/2 inch long.

What is happening with you:
You are now officially in your 2nd trimester!!!  Yay!!!  You may feel that your energy is returning.  Your breasts may be feeling a little less tender and your nausea may be totally gone by now.  If not, hang in there.  Most likely this will be gone very soon.
The top of your uterus is a little above your pubic bone now and this may be enough to push your belly out a little.  Many couples get really excited when the mother begins to show.  Finally, there is some visible evidence that there really is a baby in there!!!
It is very normal for mothers-to-be to worry about things such as the baby and the pregnancy in general.  Try not to worry too much.  If you spend all of your time worrying, you will not be able to just enjoy being pregnant.  The best thing you can do for your baby is to take good care of yourself and to worry and stress as little as possible!

TIPS FOR ORGANIZING YOUR HOME OFFICE

Whether you have a home office as a place for paying bills or you run a business out of your home, organization is the key to things running smoothly.  We live in a world where there just never seems to be enough time, so by following some simple tips, you are sure to maximize your time and have more of it to spend with your family.

  • Keep your desk clean.  I know, I know, this probably sounds pretty difficult. But remember, your desk is not a place for storage.  Your desk is your work space.  So it is time to go through those piles of papers and find them a home.  You can make 3 piles for your papers.  Toss it, file it, or do it.  Remember when tossing things, to shred anything that could used for any type of identity theft.  (I shred almost everything that I throw away simply because it has our names and addresses on it.)
  • Organize your files.  If you don't have a file cabinet, buy one.  They come in all different sizes and different price ranges.  This is one of the BEST ways to get your office organized.  By having established files, you can file papers immediately as you go through them.
  • Have an in box.  As you check the mail or receive mail/packages, have a central place for them.  You may not be able to go through them right then, but you can have a basket or box for them to be until you CAN go through them.  (I recommend having separate drawers for business/personal bills/mail.)
  • Make the most of the space that you have.  Not everyone has a large space for an office.  And that's okay.  The important thing is to make sure that you use the space you do have, wisely.  Use those file cabinets, desk drawers and shelves.  Try to have the essentials at arms length, such as pens, paper, printer, calculator, etc.

Things to remember:

  • A messy, cluttered office can result in incomplete work, missed deadlines and/or lost information.  The time spent, turning your office upside down, looking for that phone number or address, is time that is wasted and unproductive.  Just taking a few minutes a day (or even once a week), will save you so much time in the long run and will be worth the initial extra effort.
  • Try to control outside interruptions/distractions.  You don't have to answer the phone every time it rings.  If possible, have hubby help you with the kids so you can close the door and get things done.  If you have older kids, they may understand if you simply let them know that you are working and need some time with the door closed.
  • Once you are caught up going through those papers, be sure to stay that way by either going through papers immediately when you get them, or setting aside time each week to go through them.
Organizing your home office may seem daunting at first, but by taking it just one step at a time, you will be prepared to meet any challenge head on!  And once this is done, you will be surprised just how much stress it will cut out of your life.

PREGNANCY WEEK BY WEEK, WEEK 13

What is happening with your baby:
Fingerprints have now formed on your baby's little fingertips.  The veins and organs can be clearly seen through her thin delicate skin.  Her body is beginning to catch up to her head - which now makes up about 1/3 of her body size.  If you are having a girl, she now has more than two million eggs in her ovaries.  Your baby is almost three inches long and weighs almost an ounce.

What is happening with you/your body:
This is the last week of your first trimester!  Yay!  Your risk of miscarriage is now much lower than earlier in your pregnancy.  Many women, who experience many of the 1st trimester discomforts (such as nausea and fatigue), are now beginning to see those symptoms subside.  Many couples notice a very noticeable libido lift during this time.  Birth is still months away, however, you breasts may be already producing colostrum.  Colostrum is the nutrient rich fluid that feeds your baby for the first few days after birth, before your milk "comes in", or starts to flow.

TIPS FOR HAVING A SUCCESSFUL GARAGE SALE

If you are like most Americans, you probably have lots of "stuff".  Most of us buy faster than we clear out the clutter!  We end up stashing away our well intentioned buys, in our garage.  In some cases, we have used what we bought as much as we are going to, but it is still in perfectly acceptable condition, for someone else.  A garage sale is a wonderful way to get rid of unwanted junk and turn a profit at the same time.  Here are some tips to help you have a successful garage sale:

Collecting Items - You can never start collecting too early.  In fact you can collect items at any time.  Set aside a tub or box, and when you see an item you no longer want or use, put it in your "garage sale" box.  You may even want to try to mark your item right then.  This can save you a lot of time in the long run.  Marking your items will take more time than you might think.  If wait until the last minute to mark your items, you may end up pulling an alnighter the night before your big sale!

Advertise - Things you will want to include in your ad are the date and times of the sale, your address, specific items (children's toys, furniture, clothing, baby clothing, etc.).  You may even want to mention specific brands.  Many people love when they can get name brands at bargain prices.  Be sure to also place signs in strategic places, making your house easy to find.  Place the signs in high traffic areas within a few miles of your home.  If your house may be hard to find, include some directions in your ad.  If you have a long driveway, use it!  Place the super attractive items, where they can be easily seen by onlookers and others as they pass by.  As things get taken, make sure to rearrange things to keep things looking neat.

Atmosphere - Try playing some soft music in the background.  If it is a hot day, consider selling some cans of soda that you have had on ice.  Make sure to have the proper lighting so people can see the merchandise inside your garage.

Garage Sale Etiquette - As a courtesy to your customers, you shouldn't allow early sales.  Don't start selling until the time you said the sale would start.  You may have someone that was coming for a specific item, only to get there and it be gone.  Be prepared too.  You will probably have customers ask to use your bathroom, phone, or even to try things on.  Don't allow anyone to enter your home.

Finishing Up - Be sure to remove your signs as soon as your sale is over.  You don't want people knocking on your door two days later!  And last but not least, count your profits!!!!

Here is to a successful garage sale!!!!  Good luck!!!

TIPS FOR ORGANIZING YOUR HOME

We get so busy with the hustle and bustle of every day life, that we can easily get overwhelmed by the disorganization of our homes.  And sometimes, we just don't know where to start, so we continue to put it off.  Meanwhile, the situation just continues to get worse!

Here are some tips that might help you to get your home organized and help keep it that way:

  1. Set Goals for Each Room - Try making a list for each room, on what you wish to accomplish for that particular room.  Making a list will help you to maintain focus and will help to keep that overwhelmed feeling at bay.  It can be very gratifying to mark things off of that list as you get each goal accomplished.
  2. What Organization Means to You - This is really important because what one person finds is organized to them, might be a confusing mess to someone else.  So remember that organization means different things to different people.  Try to find out what is the source of your organization problems and tackle it from that point of view.
  3. Keep it Simple - Stick to easy solutions that you can commit to and stick to.
  4. Start Small - Start with the areas that you spend the most time in.  For example, maybe you want to start out by organizing your kitchen.  Start with your cabinets and just tackle it one cabinet at a time.  Then do your drawers and maybe your counter tops after that.  You will most likely not organize an entire room all in one day.  Try setting aside a certain amount of time each day, or one night a week, to work on your organizing.  Doing a little bit at a time will help to alleviate that feeling of being overwhelmed, but still feel as though you are working toward your goals.
  5. What to do With Unwanted Items - Decide what you will want to do with your unwanted items.  The list is endless, really, on what you can do with those items.  You may have a friend or relative that you can give things to.  You can also donate to local charity organizations, churches, consignment stores, etc.  You may even want to have a garage sale and make a little profit for all of your hard work!
  6. Keep Interruptions to a Minimum - In the world of having children, this can be a tough one but a necessary one.  Try to pick a time when the kids are busy playing or maybe even in bed!  This will cut down on the constant interruptions that our wonderful children can bring.  Maybe organizing in the morning (before every one else is up and moving) is a better and more productive time for you.  And if you can help it, don't answer the phone.  That's what voice mail is for!
  7. Simple Things - Have you ever gone to get yourself some headache medicine but can't find it because every medicine that you have bought over the last 5 years is still in the medicine cabinet?  I have!  You will be amazed just how good it would feel to take 30 minutes just to clean out the medicine cabinet.  It will be like a breath of fresh air, the next time you have a headache!  Try cleaning off the refrigerator magnets too.  You certainly don't have to get rid of all of them but do you really need 30?  You will also be surprised at what an eye sore all of those magnets are, and how much nicer, that alone will make your kitchen look.
  8. Where is Your Grocery List? - Have you ever been in the middle of cooking spaghetti, only to find out that you are out of tomato sauce?  Gotta love it when that happens!  Try designating a place for a grocery list and be sure to write down items as soon as you run out of them.  This is especially helpful with those things that are not every day (or weekly) items.
  9. Storage Containers - Rubbermaid containers/decorative baskets are great for storing your things in an organized fashion.  Maybe you are tired of seeing all of your every day items all over the bathroom counter.  But you use these items every day, so what are you to do?  You can buy an inexpensive decorative basket (or use one you have laying around the house) and put all of those items in one place.  Your counter will be less cluttered but you will still have those frequently used items conveniently close.
  10. Organizing Bills - If your bills are not organized, it can be very difficult to remember what to pay and when to pay it.  Buy a bill organizer and put it (neatly) where you can see it.  There are standing bill organizers (which is what I recommend) that have a slot for each day of the month.  (I purchased mine for $21.00.)  By seeing this regularly, you are less likely to forget to make that car payment!
  11. Organizing your Mail - When you get your mail, throw away the junk mail immediately.  Try having a basket for bills, things to look at, and things to shred.  This REALLY helps keep those piles of mail from turning into mountains.  And as soon as you open those bills, promptly put them in your bill organizer in the appropriate due date slot.
The little things can make a big difference in our daily lives.  By taking baby steps and starting small, things can be more manageable and less stressful.

10 TIME SAVING TIPS FOR MOMS

There just never seems to be enough time in the day to get every thing done that we need to get done.  We live in a very fast paced world so saving a few minutes here and there can really add up and make all the difference in the world.  Here are some tips that may help you to save some time and make your days a little bit easier.

  1. Have a Plan - When planning grocery store trips, try to keep them down to once or twice a week instead of going several times a week.  Try planning your meals a week ahead of time and make a list.  By making a list and sticking to it, you can save time AND money.  And try to avoid going to the store hungry.  We tend to buy on impulse when we are hungry.
  2. Delegate Responsibilities - Children live in the house too so there is no reason why they can't help out.  Make a chore list with a list of their responsibilities.  If they make a mess, have them clean it.  Have them pick up after themselves.  When they are done playing, have them clean up whatever toys they have taken out, etc.
  3. Make an Upstairs Pile - If you live in a 2 story house, this can be very useful.  If you know you will be going up and down the stairs throughout the day, try putting things in a pile (or basket) and just taking everything at once.  Limiting your trips up and down the stairs will not only save time, but will also save some much needed energy you will need to complete your day!
  4. Turn Off the TV - Turn off the TV and turn on the radio.  The TV can be a big distraction for us and our kids.  And music can be very motivating!
  5. Incorporate Exercise into Your Daily Life - Try to include exercise into your family activities.  By doing this, you don't have to try to squeeze in extra time for exercise.
  6. Time Activities - Give yourself a set amount of time to do certain (not every day tasks) things around the house.  Set a timer if you have to.  If you want to clean out your closet, try to give yourself an hour a day to work on this and it will eventually get done.  It can be very easy to start a project like this and let it monopolize your entire day.
  7. Limit Volunteer Work - Often times at the beginning of the school year, (for example) we get notices asking for volunteers for certain activities.  No one is saying that you shouldn't help out at the school, but try to limit just how much you commit to and don't be afraid to say "No."  We really do overextend ourselves sometimes.  Side Note:  I normally don't commit to anything at the beginning of the school year.  I will volunteer at the last minute because I never know when another one of my children might be sick or what might happen, in the future, that I have no control over.  This way, I don't have to end up canceling.
  8. Combine Appointments - If one of the kids are due for their check up, try getting all of the kids in at the same time.  (I always combine appointments when I can.)
  9. Get Help - Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.  Ask your husband to take the kids out for a few hours so you can get some things done or just to have a little time to yourself.  If you can get a head start on the laundry, it can leave you more time for the family later on in the day!
  10. Take a Nap - Power naps can help you just to get re-energized.  There are many documented benefits to just taking a break for half an hour, whether it is to sleep or just unwind.
Mothers often times try to be super woman.  No matter what you do, there will always be challenges where motherhood is concerned, but there are things that you can do to try to make your daily life more manageable.

KITCHEN SOLUTIONS - THE BENEFITS TO USING HERBS IN THE KITCHEN

Herbs are a fragrant and flavorful way to put some extra zing into what you are already preparing.  They have very few calories and absolutely no salt!  So you can add as much as you want and be totally guilt free in doing so!

Here are some suggestions:

THYME - Try adding thyme into stews, soups, salads (or in the dressing).  Just 2 teaspoons of thyme and you are getting almost 20 percent of your daily iron intake needs.  Thyme is often used in teas and/or cough syrups to ease dry coughs and to soothe a sore throat as well.

BASIL - Basil is commonly used in pizza, spaghetti sauces (or marinara sauces), and other popular Italian dishes.  Two teaspoons of basil, and you get 5 percent of your daily requirement of magnesium.  Magnesium is a mineral that helps to maintain muscle and nerve function.  It also helps to keep heart beats steady, supports a strong and healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong.  (It is also said that magnesium helps to curve those chocolate cravings.)

CILANTRO - Cilantro is a very versatile herb.  You can use cilantro for salsas, tacos, salads, or add to fish dishes.  By using cilantro with meat dishes, you can reduce the potential for bacterial contamination in the meat.  (This herb was used more than 2,000 years ago, by the Romans, to preserve meat!)  Cilantro is also used to help promote healthy digestion.

ROSEMARY - Rosemary is delicious in chicken dishes!  Try using rosemary in marinades to help cut down the risk of cancer.  The antioxidants, found in rosemary, may help combat potential carcinogens created when meats are grilled or broiled at temperatures above 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

DILL - Try using dill to wake up your tuna (or on grilled fish)!  Dill is also wonderful on potatoes.  Using this herb can help your body maintain healthy cholesterol levels.  There is also evidence, that suggests, that dill may also help relieve indigestion.

PARSLEY - We often think of parsley as just a garnish, but parsley is actually much more than that.  Parsley can be added to salads, dressings, dips, marinades and more.  Two teaspoons of dried parsley is 150 percent of your daily vitamin K requirements.  Vitamin K is important for healthy blood clotting and bone health.  Parsley is also high in vitamins A and C!

Adding herbs to your dishes will add delicious flavor and more importantly help to promote good health in your family.  With picky kids and picky husbands that can be quite challenging!

PREGNANCY WEEK BY WEEK - WEEK 12

What is happening with your baby:
The biggest development this week is reflexes!  Your baby's fingers will soon begin to open and close.  The toes will be able to curl and the eye muscles will clench.  His/her mouth will soon be able to make sucking movements.  If you poke your abdomen, your baby will squirm but you will not be able to feel it just yet.  The intestines, have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will begin to move into his abdominal cavity, and the kidneys will begin to excrete urine into the bladder.

Nerve cells are multiplying very quickly.  In your baby's brain, synapses are forming rapidly.  The face looks undeniably human.  His/her eyes have moved from the sides to the front of the head and the ears are in the right place.  From crown to rump, your baby is about two inches long and weighs approx. half an ounce.

What is happening with you:
Your uterus has grown to the point that your health care provider can feel the top of it (the fundus) low in your abdomen, just above your pubic bone.  You may be wearing maternity clothes by now, especially if this isn't your first pregnancy.  (With subsequent pregnancies, you tend to show earlier than you did with the first one)  If you are still pretty small and not yet in maternity clothes, you most definitely have noticed the thickening of your waist.

You may begin to feel heartburn (also known as acid indigestion).  This is a burning sensation that can extend from the bottom of your breastbone to your lower throat.  Many women don't experience heartburn for the first time until they are pregnant.  But those that have occasional bouts of heartburn, often find that it worsens when they are pregnant.  While pregnant, the placenta is producing a lot of the hormone called progesterone.  Progesterone relaxes the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach.  The heartburn can become even worse when lying down because the gastric acid can seep back up the pipe which causes the painful burning sensation.  But for many women, the problem doesn't begin or get worse until later on in the pregnancy when the growing uterus begins to push up on your stomach.  This can be a mild discomfort or can get very uncomfortable.

POTTY TRAINING TIPS

Most of us look forward to the day when the diapers go and the big kid undies are under way!  Perhaps you have already tried at a few less than successful attempts?  One thing is for certain.  Your child has to be ready!  Don't worry.  Your child will be ready one day.  ALL children are different.  They all reach milestones at different ages.  So don't stress if your friend's child was potty trained much earlier than yours.

It is very easy to get worried that your child is at a certain age and has not yet been potty trained.  But remember that putting pressure on both yourself and your child, when they are not yet ready, just adds unneeded stress on you both.  And this can actually make the potty training process take longer and regress any progress that you have made.

So how do you know when your child is ready to start potty training?  Try to look for signs that your child may be ready such as showing an interest in the potty, telling you when they need to use the restroom, or asking to be changed right after pooping.

Tips for Easier Potty Training:
  1. Bribery - All children like different things so this would vary from child to child.  You could try using some type of candy that he/she likes.  M & Ms are a good choice since they are small and easy to chew.  Maybe tell your child that if she goes to the potty, she can have 3 or 4 M & Ms.  If she wipes by herself (or at least tries) maybe she gets 2 more.  Some kids like stickers.  You could try making a chart with stickers.  Maybe get a "goodie bag" with some goodies from the dollar store.  When they use the potty, they get to pick something from it.
  2. Lead by Example - If you are potty training a little boy, have your husband encourage him to go to the "big boy potty" like daddy.  If you have a little girl, moms take them with you and encourage her to "potty like mommy".  My 5 youngest children are girls and when they are little they follow me to the bathroom anyway.  So I talk to them a lot about going to the potty like I do.  Children LOVE imitating their parents!
  3. Lots of Praise - Praise is important no matter what you are teaching your child.  Positive reinforcement is probably one of the most, if not the most, important things that you can do for your child.  Kids love it when their parents are proud and make a big deal of out something they have done.  I know my kids just light up when I compliment them about anything at all and just tell them how proud I am of them.  Praise gives children such a sense of pride and accomplishment, so do it every chance you get!
  4. Frequency of Trips to the Bathroom - Try putting your child on the potty every hour (when you can).  Remembering may be hard sometimes as you get busy doing other things.  So try setting a timer to help you remember.  They may just sit there and do nothing but I can almost guarantee that sometimes they will actually go to the bathroom.  This is how many day cares transition kids to the potty.  That is how my son got most of his training; by that and seeing the other little kids going to the potty.  I did this with my oldest daughter and she was potty trained in one weekend.  She never had an accident either.
  5. Potty Seat or Training Potty - For one of my daughters, I used a Dora potty seat that fits on the toilet.  For her, she loved it and it only cost me all of $7.  I bought a little plastic stool to help her get on the potty and this worked for her.  My two oldest daughters used the training potty.  I just put it in my bathroom and made sure they sat on it each time I went to the bathroom (of course I had to take them to their potty more often than I had to go).  But, they liked copying mommy and this method worked for them.
These are just some tips and things you can try with your child.  Every child is different and every child responds differently to different things.  All children are ready at different ages as well.  The most important thing is to not start until they are ready and to try to be as patient as possible.  If you get frustrated and mad at your child, they may hide when they need to go or may even try to hold it (#2) and this can lead to constipation and painful bowel movements.  So remember, patience, patience patience is the key to success, in this process, for both you and your child!

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR TODDLER BITES

It can be very upsetting to hear that your toddler is biting other children.  Not only are you shocked by your own child's behavior, but you may also be dealing with some very angry parents as well!

In many instances, biting is considered normal developmental behavior for toddlers.  However, even though your child may not be exhibiting abnormal behavior, biting is still not acceptable behavior to other kids and definitely not to other parents.  It is very important to act quickly and swiftly to keep the problem from getting worse.

So what can you do if your toddler is biting other children?

The first thing to do would be to find out WHY your child is biting and under what circumstances is your child is biting? Most children bite due to teething, frustration, anger, jealousy, or being overly tired.  Some children bite simply to see what happens when they bite.  Sometimes children will exhibit biting behavior as a form of acting out as well.  You may ask yourself if anything has changed at home recently?  If your toddler hasn't been socialized with other children of his/her age, this could also be a contributing factor.

Here are some suggestions:

Stay Calm - Although this can be very difficult, do your very best to stay calm.  Try to model the behavior you wish to have from your toddler.  When you are calm, you are better equipped to handle a biting incident.

Talk About the Dangers of Biting - Although toddlers are just beginning to talk, they are old enough to understand pain.  Depending on the age of your toddler, they may also be old enough to understand cause and effect.  Explain to your child (calmly but firmly) that biting hurts and so he/she should not do it.

Administering Appropriate Punishment - If you child does bite, firmly say "No bite"! and remove your child from the situation.  Administer an appropriate punishment such as taking away a favorite toy or a time out (depending on how old your toddler is as some may be too young).

Give your Toddler Other Options - Try to talk to your child about appropriate ways to express his/her anger.  Explain to them that it is okay to have feelings and to feel upset about a particular situation.  But explain that biting is not the answer.  Even though their vocabulary may be very limited, try coming up with other words/phrases (like mad, pain, hurt, etc.) to help your toddler express his/her feelings verbally and not physically.

Set Him/Her Up for Success - If your toddler seems to have trouble socializing in certain situations, try to avoid those situations.

Praise Your Toddler - Correcting your child when they do something wrong is important.  But remember to praise your toddler when he/she has done well.  Pointing out and rewarding positive behaviors will help your toddler remember the preferred behavior and reaction.

SECRETS TO DISCIPLINING YOUR TODDLER

At what age should you begin to discipline your child?  When your one year old throws a tantrum, what should you do?

While methods such as time-outs and/or taking away privileges can be very effective ways of discipline, they don't work well on toddlers (they aren't old enough to understand cause and effect).  The ability to reason with a toddler just isn't there yet.  But this is a very good time to start teaching them right from wrong and introducing them to boundaries.

Try some of these strategies:
  1. Be Consistent - You may think that allowing your crying child (to have that piece of candy before dinner) just this one time won't be a big deal.  But giving into your child's demands encourages them to throw other tantrums later, expecting the same result.  It is very important to set limits and continue to follow through over and over again.  It may take a little bit of strong parenting from you at first, but in the long run, it will make your life much easier and be more beneficial to your child.  It is also important that you and your spouse are on the same page as far as rules and discipline.  If not, this sends mixed messages to your child and causes confusion.
  2. Stay Positive - Saying "No!" to your child over and over again can actually cause them to tune you out.  Or it can even make them begin saying the word to you.  Try to save the word "No!" for safety issues.  If you see your child going for an electrical outlet, use "No!".  But if the behavior isn't dangerous try rephrasing without using "No!".  For example, my kids love taking their shoes off in the car.  But I don't like them to because then you have to put them right back on when you get to where you are going.  So I simply ask them to wait until we get to our place of destination before taking them off.  I know this can be a difficult one because "No!" just comes so naturally.  It can be a hard habit to break but if you are a little bit conscientious about it, it may become easier.  To add to "staying positive", I would also like to suggest making sure that when you child does something good, be sure to praise them for it.  We spend so much time trying to correct our children when they are doing something wrong, that we can forget to acknowledge them for making good choices as well.  I REALLY try to do this every chance I get (no matter what the age)!
  3. Show Them the Right Way - When correcting your children, show them the correct way of doing something.  Children are like sponges and learn a lot just by watching  what we do.  Often times they learn much better by watching than just by listening to what we are saying.  For example, my toddler loves to look at books.  But she can be very rough sometimes with the pages.  So I show her the correct and gentle way of turning the pages so they don't get torn.
  4. Try a Distraction - When your child is misbehaving, try to resist the urge to raise your voice and yell.  I know that can be tough, but try redirecting his/her attention.  Often times if you can put their attention onto something else, this can correct their behavior almost immediately.
  5. Praise Good Behavior - I know that I mentioned this in #2, but I think it bares repeating.  One of my daughters has a bad habit of wanting to come home from school and try to avoid doing her homework.  Well the routine is for them to come home, eat a snack and then get right on the homework.  But I was always having to get on to her about this.  Then one day, she sat down and began doing her homework without me having to say anything to her at all.  I was so proud of her and made sure to tell her that.  She took a lot of pride in that and has been much better about it since then.
I hope some of these strategies will help you.  I am constantly researching and reading to help myself to be a better parent.  I am not perfect but a work in progress, as I guess I will always be.

10 WAYS TO INDULGE YOURSELF MOMS!!!

We spend so much time taking care of everyone else, that we sometimes forget that MOMS need a little bit of R&R sometimes too.  The better we are (physically and emotionally), the better we can be for our families.

10 Ways to Indulge Yourself:
  1. GO OUT and get a cup of coffee.  (This is one of my personal favorites.)  I love to physically leave the house to get a good cup of coffee.  I love my coffee and I love the quiet time!
  2. When the kids are in school, go to one of those non-kid-friendly stores and browse.  It is so nice to go to one of those stores without having to constantly worry that one of the kids might actually touch something!  Plus, you don't have the kids or the hubby rushing you out of the store either!  You can simply relax and browse at your leisure.
  3. Get a gym membership!  Exercise is great for the mind and body.  It is a great stress reliever!
  4. Get up early, make some coffee and surf the web in total silence!!
  5. Meet a friend for coffee or lunch.  I love getting together with a good girlfriend and catching up!
  6. Paint your finger/toe nails.  May sound simple and silly, but I can't tell you how much better I feel about wearing a pair of flip flops after my toes are painted!
  7. Take a half day from work and catch a movie!  This would be a perfect time for you to watch one of those chick flicks that you could never drag hubby to!
  8. Take a long hot bubble bath.  Try including a nice glass of wine and some candles!  Tell hubby that the kids are his for an hour and lock the door!  Then add something that smells really nice to the bath water, enjoy the ambiance and relax!!
  9. Ask your husband to take the kids out for a bit (maybe to the park or to eat) and stay behind to catch up on your shows that you DVR'd during the week, but haven't had a chance to watch!
  10. Buy something for yourself!  It doesn't matter what or how little you might spend.  I could spend $10 on something for myself, but yet I am still excited just to have something new that I will be able to use.  A good one for me is health and beauty products.  There are no second chances with our skin so I really enjoy buying new things to help take care of myself and my skin.
As mothers (or even just as women period), we spend a lot of time taking care of others.  We really do forget about ourselves a lot of the time but I have learned that taking care of ourselves is just as important as anything else that we do.  So don't forget to indulge yourself!!!!

PREGNANCY WEEK BY WEEK - WEEK 11

What is happening with your baby:
Your baby is just over 1 1/2 inches long and is now almost fully formed.  The hands will soon be able to open and close into fists.  Little tooth buds are beginning to appear under the gums.  Some of the bones are beginning to harden as well.

She is stretching and kicking like crazy!  These movements will become more and more frequent as the body grows, develops and becomes more functional.  You won't feel all of the movements for another couple of months though.  The diaphragm is also forming so very soon, your baby will be hiccupping as well!

What is happening with you:
You might be getting a little bit of your energy back.  You may also notice your nausea slowly going away, but if you don't, try not to worry.  For many women, it is still a few more weeks before the nausea has gone away completely.

You may also be suffering from constipation and/or heartburn.  (The hormonal changes your body is going through slow down digestion and relax the valve between your stomach and esophagus).

Note:  Don't worry if you haven't been able to eat too much during this time.  The average weight gain for the first trimester is only 2 to 5 pounds.  Some women don't gain any weight at all during the first trimester.  (Talk to your doctor if you are losing weight.)  The baby will get what it needs from you.  You are the one that will suffer unfortunately.  But in the end, it will all be worth it!!!

HEALTHY EATING HABITS/SNACKS FOR KIDS

Sometimes getting our children to practice healthy eating habits, can be a bit of a challenge.  There are ways to incorporate healthy eating and still have your children enjoy it!

I believe the key to teaching your children how to eat the foods that are good for them, is to start them early on.  If kids start out eating healthy from the start, they will most likely continue that trend for the rest of their lives.  And what could be more important than the health of our children?

Here are some healthy snack ideas for your kiddos:
  1. Cheese - Cheese is very healthy as a snack and my kids just love it.  I like to buy the string cheese made with part skim milk.  This cuts down on the fat content a bit, but still has all of the benefits that cheese has to offer.  Cheese is loaded with protein and calcium.  So this snack also helps contribute to your child's daily calcium intake.
  2. Yogurt - Yogurt is another snack that is packed with calcium, and depending which one you buy, also has vitamins as well.  I like to buy the fruit yogurts.  You can also sprinkle in a little granola for added texture, flavor, and vitamins/protein/fiber.
  3. Peanut Butter - Peanut butter is very versatile.  You can use it to make a sandwich, top crackers, use it as a dip for fruit, etc.  It too is loaded with protein and is a good source of fiber.
  4. Eggs - Eggs are also a great source of protein.
  5. Sweet Potatoes - Sweet potato fries seem to be getting more popular every day!  You could also make sweet potato chips.  Sweet potatoes are packed full of Vitamin A, and are also a great source of Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, and folate.
  6. Baked Breads - There are so many varieties of breads you can make with fresh fruits and/or vegetables.  Try making some banana, zucchini, or pumpkin bread.  You could also make muffins to make them more fun for the kids!
  7. Whole Grain Cereals - There are so many whole grain cereals out there today that make a great snack for kids.  Honey Nut Cheerios are one of my all time favorite snacks for toddlers.  They are also a great on the go snack!
  8. Hummus - Hummus comes in a variety of flavors and is packed with nutrients.  I like to get pita chips and use the hummus as a dip.
  9. Fruit - I always buy a variety of fruit from the store.  Different fruits have different nutrients/vitamins but they are ALL good for you and your kids.  Kids can never have too much fruit.  Some of our favorites are apples, oranges, grapes, strawberries, and bananas.  Now that summer is well on its way, melons will be coming into season.  The whole family loves cantaloupe and watermelon.
  10. Smoothies - This is just another way to enjoy fruit.  There are so many varieties of smoothies that you can make.  It is completely up to you and what you like.  Take your favorite variety of fruit and simply mix it with some ice and/or yogurt.  Just put it in the blender and you have the perfect snack (or even a meal) for at home or on the go.  I have even seen prepackaged smoothie kits.  At my local grocery store they have some in the freezer section where the fruit and smoothie mix come in the bag.  The fruit is frozen so no need to add ice.  You simply put the amount you want into the blender, add the smoothie mix and some water/juice and blend.  It is done in a matter of seconds and there is plenty for me and my kids.
  11. Trail Mix - You can buy trail mix already made or you can also make your own.  Trail mix is full of a variety of nuts and dried fruits and it is packed with nutrients.  This is another on the go snack and will help keep you and/or the kids energized.
  12. Raisins - Raisins are a great source of fiber and potassium.  My kids are not too big on just going for a hand full of raisins so I like to buy the cereals that have raisins in them.  But you can also add raisins to your trail mix, baked breads, or even dips (such as peanut butter).
  13. Salad - All of my kids like salad to some degree.  They love the lettuce with low fat ranch dressing.  I am slowly but surely beginning to incorporate adding other vegetables as we go along.  I personally love a great salad full of vegetables!
  14. Carrots and Ranch - My kids LOVE baby carrots with low fat ranch dressing.  Carrots are a great source of beta-carotene and are very good for the eyes.
There are many ways for children to eat the things that are good for them and to also enjoy what they are eating.  Instilling healthy eating habits now will help ensure your kids have a long and healthy life.

FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT ON A BUDGET

Are you racking your brain, trying to figure out ways to keep the kids busy over the summer break?  Are you concerned about how you will do just that, without breaking the bank?  There are so many free, or nearly free, forms of entertainment out there.  It may take a bit of looking and doing a little bit of research, but rest assured, there are many inexpensive entertainment activities no matter where you live.

Below, I have listed some of the things that we do to keep the kids busy.  As a family of 8 with only one income, I am constantly looking for inexpensive ways for  us to do things  together as a family.  I hope this will be of great use to all!
  1. Local Parks - I see more and more parks being built in my area all the time.  Most communities have parks at no cost.  Parks are great for getting the kids out of the house and letting them burn off that extra energy that we wish we still had!  You can even take your own homemade picnic lunch and eat it at the park before playing.  Sometimes I will just stop and buy an ice cream on the way to the park.  My kids love that.
  2. Bike Trails -  Often times, we load up the bikes and take the kids to the bike trails.  This is another free activity, and boy does it wear my kiddos out!  We usually pack a snack, such as fruit, chips, crackers, along with water, juice or even soft drinks.
  3. Library - With modern technology and the internet, many people have forgotten that libraries even exist.  I recently rediscovered the library when I figured out it was too noisy to study at home!  I have one close to me that was recently rebuilt.  There is an area, with comfy chairs, where you can sit and read to your kids.  Here are just a few things my public library offers:  Mystery Group, Baby Bounce (reading for infants 3 mos. to 18 mos.), Teen Room Open (teens have an open space to use laptops, watch a movie, eat snacks, play games, do a craft and BE LOUD), Toddler Time, Preschool Story Time, Computer classes, Knitting Club, Bilingual Story Time, etc.  My point here is that the library is a GREAT way to have fun with your kids and to add some educational fun learning to the mix.  I plan to use my library a lot this summer.
  4. Movies - Now normally, going to the movies is not free.  But there are ways to make it more affordable.  First, go to a matinee (afternoon) showing.  Matinees are normally at least half the price, than if you were to go at night.  Second, instead of buying your snacks at the theater, try stopping by the local dollar store and stocking up.  Most dollars stores have the name brands that the theaters do and just think of all the money you save.  Moms, just smuggle it in with your purse!  You can even pop your popcorn at home and put it in a freezer bag and smuggle that in as well.  OR, eat before you go to the movies and skip the snack all together!
  5. Potluck - Inviting friends over for dinner doesn't have to hurt your pocket book.  Try having a potluck, where everyone brings something!  It is a lot less expensive for you, not to mention less to have to clean up afterward!  Potlucks have always been a lot of fun to me, and you get to spend more time visiting and less time fussing over the meal.
  6. Swimming - Many communities have pools that you can swim in for free.  We have one at one of our free parks I talked about.  It is nice and well maintained.  It is open all year and they have scheduled times when you can do free swim.  They also offer swim lessons by the Red Cross during the summer.  Those aren't free, but are very reasonably priced.  You may also have a pool in your neighborhood.
  7. Movie Option #2 - Instead of going out to a movie, stay in and watch a family movie together.  We love to just pop some popcorn, break out the chocolate and curl up together to a good movie.  My kids really look forward to doing that.  This is the only time they get to eat in the living room!
  8. Movie Option #3 - Do you have a netflix subscription?  Check out http://www.netflix.com.  Many people might already have this but we pay about $12 a month and can even download movies on the spot.  I do try to limit TV watching with the kids, but this is an inexpensive way to have a good movie on hand at all times.
  9. Walking - Take a walk together in your neighborhood.
  10. Walking your Pet - We actually have a dog walking park near my house, but if you don't, you can always give your dog a walk, in your neighborhood, and get some exercise at the same time!
  11. Eating Out - We also try limiting this, but we all know that there are those crazy nights where you just don't have time to cook.  You had ever intention but something has come up and you just can't tonight.  So what do you do?  Check out all of the local restaurants close to you; whether fast food or dine in.  MANY of these restaurants have one night a week where kids either eat free, or at very low cost.  Some places near me that offer this are Sonic, Chick-fil-A, Luby's, James Coney Island, Denny's, just to name a few.  I know McDonald's (in my area) are offering any size fountain drinks for $1, all summer long.  We have taken advantage of that deal a time or two!  I also take full advantage of the $1 menu that most fast food restaurants offer.  In a pinch, you can really save money using this.
  12. Free Magazine - My area offers a free magazine that you can pick up just about anywhere, that gives a schedule of all kinds of local entertainment.  Most of the entertainment is free or at very low cost.  There are all kinds of festivals and other activities all year long.  If you have one of these magazines for your area, I highly recommend checking it out.  You will find a wealth of information in them.
  13. Zoo - The Zoo is fairly inexpensive as far as admission goes.  You can bring in your own food at my local zoo.  If you have that same option, I recommend that as food almost anywhere can get pretty pricey.  You may even want to look into buying a family season pass.  Here is would cost about $80 for my whole family for an entire year.  Not bad with having such a large family.  Within one trip, this would end up paying for itself already.
  14. Family Game Night - Break out the board games and make a night of it!
  15. Reading - Read a good book!  I often have my kids read.  It is a good way to keep them away from the TV and game systems, and to make them use their imagination.
Cheap entertainment is out there.  All it takes is a little imagination and some digging.  You don't have to have a lot of money to have fun!

GLIDING ROCKER - ANOTHER MUST HAVE!!!!

A gliding rocker is another "must have" item of mine.  I am sure many moms have gotten along just find without rocking chairs, but I personally could not live without mine!

After my first child was born, he was in intensive care for a few days.  I remember going into the NICU to visit him, for the first time.  The NICU had gliding rockers next to each baby bed.  They must have been a pretty new thing back then, as I had never seen them before.  But I was in heaven sitting in this chair and just knew I had to have one.  That gliding rocker is still in my living room; almost seventeen years later.  It still glides beautifully.

Gliding rockers are a wonderful place for bonding with your baby, feeding your baby, putting your baby to sleep, etc.  I have spent countless nights and hours in my gliders, so comfort is key.  Be sure to choose a glider that has thick cushions and sufficient distance between arm rests.  (If the arms rests are too close together, and you plan to breastfeed, it may be more difficult and uncomfortable)

Gliders range greatly in price.  I have seen them as low as $70 and as high as several hundred dollars.  I recommend meeting in the middle somewhere.  These are just one of those items that I recommend making an investment in.  It is a great piece of furniture for any nursery, but can also be used for years to come!

    REVIEW FOR MATERNITY CLOTHES

Well, if you haven't already gone out to buy that first maternity outfit, you will probably be doing that very soon!

Summer is well on its way.  The summer months can make anyone miserable and uncomfortable, but no one more than a pregnant woman right?  I put together a list of reviews for different stores, where you can purchase maternity clothes.

Target - At Target you can find Liz Lange maternity clothes.  They have a great selection and I find Liz Lange to by stylish, comfortable and affordable.  You can find tops for around $20, but I have seen them for even less when they are on sale or on clearance.  The jeans run about $30 per pair but denim does go with everything, so I recommend investing in at least one pair.  I've seen pants for as little as $20.  They also have crop pants that run from about $15 to $20.  (I bought a pair at the end of my last pregnancy and just lived in them.  They were so comfortable)  Target has a pretty good return policy, but you might want to keep your receipt, just in case.  I have never had any problems returning maternity clothes or anything else at Target.  Target  is also a great one stop shop!

Motherhood Maternity - You can find some reasonable prices at Motherhood, but their return policy is awful.  The tags still have to be on the clothes, and you only have 10 days from the receipt of purchase date.  So, if you wore something once and the seam tore, you would not be able to return it.  If you bought something for someone else, you would need to give it to them immediately so they would have time to return it if they needed to.  You definitely want to think twice about shopping where you have very limited return options.

JC Penney - You can find some great prices at JC Penney, and it seems as though they have sales all year long, BUT they don't have a very big maternity selection.  If you are at JC Penney for something else, or have one close by, it may be worth a look.  Don't forget to look online too!

KOHL'S -  Kohl's does have a maternity section, but there isn't much of one.  There might be 2 or 3 racks.  I like Kohl's as a store, but I wouldn't make a special trip just for maternity clothes.  I did look online and didn't see that they had much more of a selection there.

There are many places where you can get maternity clothes, whether it be online or you physically go out and shop.  The stores that I mentioned are probably the most common, affordable, and easily accessible to all.

When you do start shopping, have fun!!  Looking for deals can be really exciting.  Good luck on "the big hunt"!!

PREGNANCY WEEK BY WEEK - WEEK 10

What is happening with your baby:
Even though your baby is just over an inch long, (crown to bottom), and weighs less than a quarter of an ounce, your baby has now completed the most important part of its development.  This is a time, referred to as the fetal period, where the tissue and organs in his/her body are growing very quickly.

Your baby is swallowing fluid and kicking like crazy.  The vital organs (kidneys, intestines, brain and liver) are now making red blood cells in place of the disappearing yolk sac.  All of the vital organs are in place and beginning to function.  They will continue to grow and mature throughout your pregnancy.

Your baby's limbs now have the ability to bend.  The hands are flexed and meet over the heart.  The feet may be long enough to meet in front of the body.  The outline of the spine is visible through the translucent skin.  The baby's forehead has a bulge (but only temporarily), for the developing brain.  In the next few weeks, your baby will double in size.

How things are changing for mom:
When you go to your next prenatal visit, you may be able to hear your baby's heartbeat with a doppler.  (A doppler is a hand held device used by your doctor to hear the ultrasonic activity)  Your health care provider does this by simply placing the dopper on your belly.

The size of your pre-pregnancy uterus was approximately the size of a small apple.  By this week, it is now the size of a large grapefruit!

You may be feeling those regular size clothes are getting to be a bit snug.  If you have not done it yet, now would be the time to go ahead and get a good pair of maternity jeans and a new bra (this is probably the places you notice expanding the most).  There are many maternity jeans that you can wear throughout pregnancy and even right after you have the baby.  You can't even tell they are maternity jeans and it is great to have something comfortable both before and after your baby is born.  It buys you some extra time to get back into that favorite pair of jeans, once you have had your baby!   And denim goes with everything!

Make sure when you buy a bra, to get one that will grow with you; especially if you are planning on breastfeeding.  Your chest will probably expand more throughout your pregnancy and your cup size will most likely go up if you do breastfeed.  Also, if you do plan to breastfeed, you may want to consider buying a nursing bra and just using it throughout your pregnancy (instead of just a regular maternity bra).  The recommended number of nursing bras to have is three.  One you are wearing, one that is clean (ready for a quick change if necessary), and one that may be in the dirty clothes.

By simply buying that new pair of pants and getting a more comfortable bra, you will be surprised at how much more comfort that will give you!

    YEAST INFECTIONS WHILE PREGNANT

It is normal to have an increase in vaginal discharge whenever you are pregnant, however, if you have vaginal itching, vaginal redness, feel sore and have burning, you probably have thrush (candida or monilia).  The OTC remedies (suppositories/creams) are perfectly safe throughout pregnancy, but as I always say, please make sure to speak with your health care provider first.

Try to cut down on sugar and white flour until your infection is gone; perhaps even after it is gone.  It is said that natural plain yogurt (not flavored) is very good at keeping yeast infections at bay.  It helps to restore the natural balance of organisms.

If you do get a yeast infection, don't worry.  It is very normal to get more yeast infections while pregnant.  Many women don't experience their first yeast infection until they become pregnant for the first time.  Just think....our vaginas are the perfect place for bacteria to grow.  All bacteria needs, in order to grow, is a warm, dark, damp place.  And that makes the perfect environment for a yeast infection.

Please also be aware that antibiotics can also help cause yeast infections.  Antibiotics are meant to kill bacteria but they can sometimes kill the good bacteria (that help fight off the bad bacteria) as well.

    Some suggestions that might help:
    • Eat plain yogurt (as mentioned above).
    • Wear cotton (breathable) underwear.
    • Try to take a 2nd bath each day (even if only to rinse off "down there").
    • Don't use any deodorant soaps, sprays, or wipes in the vaginal area.
    • Try to shower right after sexual intercourse, if at all possible.

CROCK POT RECIPE FOR BEEF POT ROAST

I have been covering a lot of pregnancy related topics but I wanted to share this simple recipe with all of you.  It is super easy and very tasty and everyone likes it in my house.  We all have to eat right?  And my blog is about mommies, and family and everything that falls under that umbrella.  Food certainly falls under that category.  I hope you will try it and I hope you like it.

    You will need:
    6 Large Potatoes
    1 Onion
    3 Cloves of Garlic
5 Beef Bouillon Cubes (plus 5 cups of water)
    Liquid Smoke
    Worcestershire Sauce
    1 3-4lb Beef Roast

    Directions for Cooking:
Measure 5 cups of water and add the bouillon cubes to that.  (You should add 1 Bouillon cube per 8 ounces of water)  Next add about 3 shakes worth of liquid smoke to this. (Be careful.  Liquid Smoke is very concentrated and a little bit goes a long way).  To this, add a few shakes of Worcestershire Sauce (to taste).  Bring all of this to a boil.  Once it is to a boil, give it a good stir and turn off the heat.

Cut your vegetables to a bite size.  I cut my onions much smaller so the kids can't taste them!  Choose what seasoning you want to use for your roast.  (I use season salt and lemon pepper).  Season the outside of your roast and rub it in on all sides of the roast.  Peel your cloves of garlic.  Cut 3 deep slits in the roast.  Push the cloves of garlic deep into the slits on the roast.  Put your roast into your crock pot.  Add your vegetables around the sides of the roast.  Add your liquid Bouillon broth.  Cook on high for approx. 8 hours.  When it is done, it should be fork tender and fall apart.  Salt to taste.  You probably won't need additional salt since you already seasoned the roast and the broth also has salt.

Please note that you can certainly tweak this and/or add other vegetables if you would like, such as, carrots, celery, etc.

PREGNANCY, WEEK BY WEEK - WEEK 9

    What your baby is doing:
Your baby is nearly an inch long.  (This is roughly the size of a grape)  He/she weighs just a fraction of an ounce.  The baby is beginning to look more human every day.  The essential body parts are all there, but they will continue to grow and mature in the coming months.  Your baby's heart will finish dividing into four chambers and the valves will start to form, as well as the little teeth.  The tail is completely gone.  The organs, muscles and nerves are beginning to start working.  The external sex organs are in place but won't be distinguishable for another few weeks.  The eyes are completely formed but they are fused shut.  They will stay shut until week twenty seven.  The earlobes, mouth, nose and nostrils are now more distinct.  The placenta has now developed enough to take over most of the critical job of producing hormones.  Now that your baby's basic physiology/development is in place, he/she is ready for rapid weight gain!

What is happening in your uterus:
Your waistline may be thickening some but you very well may not look pregnant yet.  BUT you probably feel pregnant.  By this time, morning sickness and other symptoms are in full force for the majority of women.

You may also still be feeling like you are on an emotional roller coaster.  Don't worry.  This will normally ease up in the 2nd trimester.

HOW DO YOU STAY COMFORTABLE WHEN YOU ARE PREGNANT?

So what is the best way to stay comfortable when you are pregnant??  Well, it can be difficult, at times no matter what you do.  But there are things/products out there that can help!
I highly recommend this Comfort-U (CU 9000) Total Body Pillow.  This pillow will support you completely, from front to back and from top to bottom.  I cannot tell you how important it is to have a pillow that gives you great support, while you are pregnant.  It can be the difference between a great nights sleep, or a night with very little sleep at all.  It may also help keep you from rolling over on your back during the night.  At some point during your pregnancy, you may experience lower back pain.  It is suggested that you lay on your side with a pillow between your legs, to help alleviate that back pain.  You can see, this pillow will also accommodate that.

Product Description:  Includes one white 50/50 (cotton/poly) pillowcase.  Each "leg" is approx. 64" long and 10.5" wide (10 lbs.).

I love a great body pillow whether I am pregnant or not, so just remember that this pillow can be used anytime for a great night's sleep!

HAVE YOUR EVER THOUGHT ABOUT MAKING YOUR OWN BABY FOOD???

You know, I had never really thought about making my own baby food before.  The thought just never really crossed my mind to tell you the truth.  Sure, I had heard of people doing it, but never really knew anyone who had done it.  But after I had this last baby (she was born Sept. 10th of 2009), I was talking to a friend of mine, who had a baby just the month before me.  She was making her own baby food as well, for the very first time.  And as we started talking about it, I decided I would give it a try.  It is much simpler than I thought it was, probably much better for your baby, and soooooo much cheaper than buying the already prepared jar foods.

The very first food I did for Mary (my 7 month old) was sweet potatoes.  Now, I don't eat sweet potatoes myself, so I didn't know the first thing about how to cook one.  But I learned it is no different than cooking a regular potato.  I bought a couple of organic sweet potatoes.  I put them in the microwave and then scooped out the insides.  I put it in my food processor with a little bit of water.  (I recommend a food processor rather than a blender because the blender may not get the strings out) The sweet potato might be a little bit pasty, but if you just add a little bit of water, it is fine.  Once you have it at your desired consistency, you put it in ice trays and freeze it.  Once it is frozen, you put into ziploc snack bags and voila!  You have baby food!!!  You simply defrost when you are ready to serve.  You can do that just by setting the food out or putting it in hot water; depending on how quickly you plan on feeding your baby.  I ended up making 16 servings for $1 my first go round.  Yes, I said a dollar!!!  Sixteen servings in the regular small jars would have cost approximately $5.00; actually probably a little bit more.  Those jars run about $.33 a piece.

    How to make:

You certainly can just feed your baby the food just as it is.  But I chose to start Mary out by mixing a little bit of organic baby cereal along with some of my breast milk.  I gave that to her for a couple of weeks.  Once I knew she could tolerate that okay, I then mixed the sweet potatoes with that and fed it all to her.

Bananas-  Of course, there isn't any cooking involved with bananas.  You simply peel, puree and freeze in the ice trays, etc.  I did add just a touch of lemon juice to it to keep them from getting too brown.

Avacado-  You just buy them really ripe and again put them in the food processor and repeat the above process.  (I also added a touch of lemon juice to this as I did to the bananas)

Apples and Pears-  For those, you would peel them first.  I use a special apple cutter that slices the apple and then also takes out the core.  You can use this tool with the pears as well.  You then boil them.  (I boiled them separately but you don't have to).  Once they are fork tender, I puree them in the food processor.  These fruits hold a lot of water just from the boiling process, but if it seems a bit thick, I just add a little bit of the water I boiled the fruit in until I get the desired consistency.

    Tips:

    • If you are unsure about a fruit or vegetable, simply look at the first foods that are in jars down the baby food isle.  That is where I got my ideas from as far as what to prepare for Mary's age.
    • Use a food processor instead of a blender (if you have one).  I think the food processor does a better job of pureeing the food.
    • Only introduce one fruit or vegetable per week.  The reason for this, is so that if your baby has an allergic reaction to something you have fed him/her, you can pin point exactly which fruit/vegetable it was.

Making your own baby food is so much better for your baby and so much more cost effective.  You can make tons of baby food in advance also.  So, this isn't something you have to do every day.  The more ice trays you have, the more food you can prepare at once.  I only have to make food about once a month!  I never dreamed it would be this easy and it has been said that making your own food and exposing them to more foods, will help your child to not be such a picky eater; as many children often are.  There are lots of benefits to both mom and baby!

THE NEWBORN ROCK 'N PLAY SLEEPER

The Newborn Rock 'n Play Sleeper is a nighttime sleeper and playtime seat all in one!  And it's the only infant seat that meets industry safety standards for bassinets.  So besides using it as a perfect place for baby to rock (with a gentle push from you!) and play during the day, you can also use it as a place for baby to sleep at night.  It has an inclined seat, which makes sleeping more comfortable for babies who need their head elevated.  Other features include three-point restraint to keep baby secure, a toy bunny for soothing and entertaining, and a washable insert for comfort and support.  Plus it's very lightweight, so it's easy to move around the house.

Maximum weight:  25 lbs. (11.3 kg)

     Better for baby:
    •   Comfortable incline for babies who need it.
    Better for Mom:
    • Goes anywhere - folds flat for storage and portability!
    • So convenient - take it from room to room!
    • Versatile - baby can even sleep overnight in it.
I am promoting this product, even though I have never used it.  But I do have a lot of faith in Fisher Price Products and I have done a lot of research on this product.  It has great reviews!  I wish I had known about it with my last baby.  It does everything that you need!  There are so many of the baby products that are so big and bulky.  Then add a baby to the mix and it can be very difficult just to get around easily.  So I am all about making life for a new mom easier!

As mentioned above, this product does recline comfortably for the baby.  This can help for babies with Acid Reflux issues.  All babies have Acid Reflux to some degree; thus the spitting up.  But for some, it bothers them more than others.  And some even require medication (like 2 of mine).  The doctors will specifically tell you to elevate their bed, if this is the case.  So with this product, you already have that.  And it also helps to have that incline if your baby has a cold or stuffy nose.  And of course, the "back to sleep" position is what is recommended for infants as well.

Most babies also like to be swaddled or feel as if they are being cradled.  Newborns have very jerky movements due to their central nervous system not being fully developed at birth.  So they like the feel of being held.  Just think....your baby has been in very close quarters for nine months, so this sleeper also caters to that need.

The versatility of this product is just endless.  It would make a great addition to your own baby collection; or even a great gift!

PREGNANCY - WEEK BY WEEK, WEEK 8

        What's New with the Baby:
Your baby now has webbed fingers and toes poking out from its hands and feet.  The eyelids almost cover his eyes.  He/she has tubes that extend from his throat to the branches of the developing lungs.  The tail is just about gone.  In the brain, nerve cells are branching out to connect with one another and forming primitive neural pathways.  The genitals haven't quite developed enough to tell whether you are having a boy or a girl.  Your baby is about the size of a kidney bean.  And your baby is moving all about, even though you can't feel it yet.

        How Your Body is Changing:
You may notice that your bra isn't quite fitting the way it once did.  You may need to go ahead and get that bigger bra.  Make sure that it offers plenty of support.  Also keep in mind that you may go up a couple of cup sizes; maybe even more if you plan to breastfeed.  Your chest will expand throughout your pregnancy.  Make sure to buy a bra that will support all of these upcoming changes, so that you won't constantly have to buy new ones.  That can get expensive!!   Please take a look at the Medela bra I have posted.  This is a really good price and it is a very supportive bra.  It is best to have at least 3 bras.  The one you are wearing, one that may be dirty, and one that is clean you can quickly put on if you need to.

If you are feeling unusually tired, that is very normal.  This is all due to all of the hormonal changes that are rapidly taking place right now.  If you are experiencing nausea or vomiting, this will also add to your fatigue.  You may even be having a hard time sleeping right now.  Again, very normal as your body is preparing for your growing baby.  Hang in there!!  The nausea should subside along with some of the fatigue shortly after you enter that second trimester.  There is an end in sight, even if it doesn't seem like it right now!

        SEXUAL RELATIONS DURING PREGNANCY

There is so much misinformation out there, regarding sex during pregnancy.  Here are some facts about this important area of your life.

Sexual relations during a normal pregnancy are not harmful in any way.  As long as there is no bleeding and your membranes are in tact, intercourse anytime during your pregnancy is permissible and safe.

Rules for the frequency of intercourse can't be set by any book.  It is up to your own physical desires on how often you are sexually active.  For some women sexual desire is heightened during pregnancy due to the increase of female hormones.  Knowing you don't fear becoming pregnant, often times, makes sexual enjoyment great at this time.  Orgasms are also in no way harmful.  Please know that it is normal to have some cramping after an orgasm, as this does make the uterus contract.  It shouldn't be uncomfortable or last for very long.  For some women however, your sexual desire may decrease.  Don't be alarmed if you are in the "decrease" category.  That too is normal.  It is different for everyone.

Some habits may require some alteration because of the changing shape of your body.  This is a great time to experiment with new intercourse positions.  The male above female position will require some modification.  Many couples find it more comfortable for the female to assume the position above the male.  Side or rear entry can be tried to satisfy your own unique desires.  Many women experience vaginal dryness at some point of the pregnancy.  If this occurs, you can use a lubricant.  As I always say, check with your health care provider first, but it should be just fine.

If you have any questions about the practice of sexual relations during your pregnancy, don't be afraid or embarrassed to ask your health care provider.

Also remember that toward the end, intercourse can become very uncomfortable.  Just listen to your body and communicate with your partner about what you are feeling.

        STRETCH MARKS

About 90 percent of women experience stretch marks, to some degree, during pregnancy.  Stretch marks are a type of scar tissue that forms when the skin's normal elasticity is not sufficient to accommodate the stretching required during pregnancy.  The most common place for stretch marks to occur is on the abdomen.  Some women do experience stretch marks on the breasts, buttocks, or thighs as well; sometimes even on the arms.

        Things you can try:
        • Make sure that your diet contains the adequate amounts of essential sources of nutrients needed for healthy skin.  The most important vitamins are Vitamin C and Vitamin E.  Protein is also very important.
        • Remember that stretch marks are caused from within, and external creams won't prevent them.
        • Even though keeping your skin soft and moisturized won't prevent stretch marks, it might help minimize them.  There are MANY creams out there to help keep your skin nice and soft throughout pregnancy; or anytime.
        • Stretch marks don't normally disappear after delivery, but over time, they will tend to fade.
Although there is not cure for stretch marks, I find that the best form of action to keep them to a minimum, is to keep your skin moisturized and to try not to gain your weight too quickly.  If you gain weight at a slower rate, it can help minimize the stretch marks.  DON'T STARVE YOURSELF!!  I am just pointing out that those big and quick growth spurts can possibly make those stretch marks a little bit worse.

Please also remember that stretch marks can also be hereditary.  By that I mean, that a lot also has to do with how elastic your skin is and genetics has a lot to do with that.  So a lot of it is out of your control.  Again, keep that skin moist and try not to gain the weight too quickly.  Outside of that, there is not much you can do.

I know I spoke about these products before, but since I have commented on keeping that skin moist, I wanted to mention this product again.  I love it and think it bares repeating.

Please, please try this product!!  You won't regret it and these products are anywhere from 94 to 97 percent natural.  I highly recommend it during pregnancy or ANYTIME.  They also have a Baby Carrots line that is ALL natural.  It is good stuff and I will promote it often.  I just found it myself a couple of months ago.  I wish I had tried it sooner.

        NOSEBLEEDS DURING PREGNANCY

As you may already know, during pregnancy, hormone levels increase.  This increases the amount of blood your body makes to meet the needs of your growing baby.  The mucous membranes inside your nose may swell and become dry, and can bleed easily as a result of the increase in your hormone levels.

        Try this to help:
        • Increase your fluid intake.
        • Use a cold mist humidifier to moisten the air in your home.  (Be sure to clean the humidifier regularly.)
        • You can also use saline nose drops to help open your nasal passages.  Saline drops are safe for even the newest of babies so don't worry about using them if you need to.
        • I also would put Vaseline on a q-tip and rub it on the inside of my nose.  It really helped with the rawness and the bleeding.  And it is perfectly safe.  I did mention it to my doctor and he said it was fine.
My doctor told me that all Tylenol products are safe throughout pregnancy.  I used Tylenol Sinus, but as I always say, please speak with your health care provider before using any medications.

BLEEDING AND SWELLING GUMS WHILE PREGNANT

When you are pregnant, the increase in your volume of circulation and supply of certain hormones may cause tenderness, swelling, and bleeding of gums.  You may also have a lack of Vitamins C, which can also be a cause.

        Things to try:
        • Be sure to not neglect proper care of your teeth and gums, even though discomfort may tempt you to ignore regular brushing and flossing.
        • Be sure to use an antiseptic mouthwash.  My personal favorite is Listerine.  This will help reduce the chance for infection and other gum disease.
        • Getting your teeth professionally cleaned may also help.  Just be sure to let your Dentist know that you are pregnant, although most routine procedures are safe while you are pregnant.
        • Try getting some Vitamin C into your regular diet.  Vitamin C also helps tooth and gum tissues to be stronger.

PREGNANCY WEEK BY WEEK - WEEK 7

What is happening with the baby:
The hands and feet are emerging from the developing arms and legs.  They may look more like paddles at this point.  You baby is still considered an embryo and has something like a small tail.  This is an extension of the tailbone.  The tail will disappear within a few weeks.  That will be the only thing getting smaller.  Your baby has doubled in size since last week and now measures half an inch long.  That would be about the size of a blueberry.
If you could see inside your womb, you'd see spot eyelid folds partially covering her eyes, which already have some color.  You would also see the tip of her nose and tiny veins beneath parchment thin skin.  Both sides of your baby's brain are growing, and her liver is churning out red blood cells until the bone marrow forms and takes over this role.  The baby also has an appendix and a pancreas, which will eventually produce the the hormone insulin to aid in digestion.  A loop in the baby's growing intestines is bulging into her umbilical cord, which now has distinct blood vessels to carry oxygen and nutrients to and from her tiny body.

        Changes in your body:
Your uterus has doubled in size in the past five weeks.  Eating may be very difficult right now; especially if you are experiencing nausea.  If you are feeling sick, hang in there!  For most, it does get better within a few weeks.  You may also need to urinate more frequently.  This is due to the increase in blood volume and the extra fluid being processed through your kidneys.  By now, you already have about 10 percent more blood than you did before you were pregnant.  By the end of your pregnancy, you will have 40 to 45 percent more blood running through your veins to meet the demands of a full term baby.  And as your uterus grows, pressure on your bladder will send you to the restroom more.

        BABY MONITORS

A baby monitor is just another one of those must have baby products, in my opinion.  You can buy baby monitors super inexpensive (that only make sound), but I really prefer to have a baby monitor that has a screen to where you can actually see the baby; not just hear the baby.  I cannot tell you how many times I have heard the baby cry, or what I think is a cry, just to find out she was just making a noise.  There have been times, where she was simply stirring and I actually woke her up just by checking on her.  You can always check on their well being just at a glance, with a monitor that allows you to see the baby.  They come in a variety of styles.  The price can vary greatly as well, depending on what you want.  Do you want color or black and white?  Do you want only one screen or two?  Whatever you decide, it is well worth the investment to have that extra peace of mine.

This is a picture of the one that I bought with my last baby.  It has been just wonderful.  I can look at her anytime I want.  And now that she is turning over, I like to check often, and make sure she doesn't get tangled up in the blankets, etc.

Here is small description, care of Google/Summer Infant Day/Night:
An affordable video monitor that allows you to see and hear your baby day and night on a 5" black and white screen.  Stylish aesthetics fit with today's home decor.  Large, 5" B&W picture display with night vision 900 MHz technology for superior clarity and 350' range Video on/off button for nighttime channel selection to minimize interference.

        THE UMBILICAL CORD

Most people have an idea of what the umbilical cord is but I thought I would just post a little bit more about it.

The umbilical cord is developing tissue of sorts.  This is a long, semi-transparent jelly-like rope.  The cord, attached at the fetus' navel, is a continuation of blood vessels seeking nourishment by extending into and probing the placenta.  The cord is cut after delivery.  It has served it's purpose in the uterus and is of no further use.  Research has found that blood from the umbilical cord can be banked (saved) to treat a number of life-threatening diseases.  Your health care provider will probably give you some information on this but if you would like more information on saving your baby's cord blood call:  1-800-588-6377, ext. 233.

        HOW IS THE FETUS NOURISHED?

The uterus does much more than simply housing your fetus for nine months.  Its lining has grown thick with small and active cells called "trophoblasts" that come from the fertilized egg.  These foraging like cells grow in size to form the placenta, which are often referred to as the "afterbirth".  These cells form tiny projections similar to the roots of a plant, and their function is very similar as well.  They reach out to tap the mother's blood supply and bring necessary nourishment to the fetus.  The efficient placenta also carries off the fetus' waste.

The placenta transfers almost every intake of the mother to the fetus, food, air, liquids, etc.  This also applies to most drugs/medicines which should only be taken under the advice of your health care provider.

While the placenta is carrying nourishment and waste to and from the fetus, amniotic fluid is being produced in the uterus.  This is retained in an "amniotic bag", which surrounds the embryo.  The bag maintains a constant temperature and cushions the fetus against possible injury.  It also provides a substance in which the fetus can easily move around, as well as, supplying some of the fetus' fluids.

BABY SWINGS - ANOTHER MUST HAVE IN MY OPINION!

I know many moms live without baby swings, but for me, it is a must have item!  Much like a baby bouncer, it is like having an extra set of hands.  I use mine daily, several times a day.

I LOVE my Fisher Price Rain Forest Cradle Swing.  I used to use the regular battery operated baby swings, but when I saw this one, I had to have it.  As much as I love the battery operated baby swings, they do tend to eat up batteries like crazy.  You will go through many and that can get very expensive.  So I decided that buying a more expensive swing, would save me money in the long run, with all the money I would be saving in batteries.  What I mean, is that this one has a plug option!!!  So you can plug it in and let it go on forever if you choose!  I also love the side-to-side or front-to-back option that it has.  And this is great deal here on Amazon.  I spent about $35 dollars more on mine!

I will give a brief description (courtesy of Fisher Price) of any other features that you might find on this swing.

Baby takes a relaxing swing (side-to-side or front-to-back) as she watches plush rainforest friends in the mobile above play "peek-a-boo" among the leaves.  While baby reclines in cradle comfort, one of twelve different songs play, along with sooting nature sounds.  And when baby's trip to the rainforest is over, the mobile swings away until another day.  The fisher Price Rainforest Open-Top Cradle Swing features six soothing swing speeds, with a plug-in option that can save you money on batteries.  Two-position reclining seat and 3-point restraint.  Folds easily for storage.

The Fisher Price Rainforest Open-Top Cradle Swing requires 4 "D" alkaline batteries (not included).         Weight Limit:  25 lbs. (11.3 kg)

Developmental Guidelines:  Use cradle swing from birth until a child becomes active and can climb out of seat.

        Better for Baby...
Promotes Comfort & Security:  Comfortable cradle seat with leafy rainforest canopy, calming music & sound effects, and gentle swinging motion offer baby a sense of comfort and relaxation.

        Stimulates Senses
Watching leaves open and close and the rainforest animals move in and out of baby's sight fosters visual tracking skills.  Rainforest music and sound effects stimulate baby's auditory skills.

        Better for Mom...
Plug- in Fisher Price cradle swing saves money on batteries!  But you do have the option to use batteries when an outlet is not available.  Swing-away rainforest mobile for easy access to baby.  Variety of 2 swinging motions.

There are many baby swings out there.  Many have followed this side-to-side or front-to-back concept.  It's great!  But I have used this Fisher Price model for 2 babies now and have loved it.  And as I said, this is a great price.  I paid a lot more.  It is still selling for as much, if not, more than what I paid for it 2 1/2 years ago.
